May. 31st, 2006 08:19 pmYeah, so, yesterday there was almost an electrical fire in my apartment. Apparently my water heater was full of... well, water. And it met with the wires in the water heater.
Now, let's do a recap of kindergarten chemistry...
WATER + ELECTRICITY = BAD.
So yeah I'm sitting in my room, I'd just eaten lunch, it was my lunch break from work. So all of a sudden I hear this buzzing noise and I was like um wtf is that? At first I thought it was coming from the doorbell-like mechanism on my door, which I didn't think worked, and upon examination I found that it in fact does not work. So then I hear it again and I'm like hmm, that's coming from the water heater. Why is it buzzing? And then I smell burny-ness and I'm like OH MY GOSH SDFETH3904trhwoaifbw98wfhL(#R*hf4!!!! So I am FREAKING OUT and I called the lady at the leasing office, explained the situation, and kept saying "Oh my gosh I'm REALLLY scared OH MY GOSH!!!!! I'M REALLY SCARED" about 400 times. So she zoomed on over in her trusty golf cart and turned off my electricity breaker. She put in an order for maintenance to get over here RIGHT after their lunch. They come and they realize that my entire water heater is full of water and this should have happened a lot sooner than it did. BUT OBVIOUSLY GOD WANTED IT TO HAPPEN AT 12:45 PM ON A WEEKDAY THAT I HAPPENED TO GO HOME FOR LUNCH SO I WOULD BE THERE AND MY APARTMENT WOULD NOT BURN DOWN!!!!! Seriously, that part scares me almost as much as the whole fire aspect. Because as we all know, I am SO @#$%ING SCARED of fire. Like, ridiculously. It's probably a phobia really.
On the bright side, I got a new water heater out of the whole deal.
Yeah so I was on adrenaline for a good couple hours after that. It was a scary experience.

Date: 2006-06-01 01:27 am (UTC)i used to be terrified there would be a fire in my house when i was little. it kept me up at night, instead of the usual monsters under the bed. i remember many conversations and debates with my parents in the middle of the night revolving around the capability of the fire department being able to get to the house on time and the fact that i NEEDED MY DOOR CLOSED in case there was a fire.

Date: 2006-06-01 02:47 pm (UTC)I am pretty scared of fire too as we had a housefire back in '91. I used to lie awake at night convinced it'd happen again and I'd be dead in the morning. It's also made me super paranoid in the winter that no electrical cords are near vents.
